LTI 1.3

Connect external learning tools and H5P to Quire over LTI 1.3.

LTI 1.3 connects Quire to external learning tools: a publisher’s content, a coding environment, a simulation, or H5P. The tool runs on its own site; Quire signs the learner in and shares the course and role allowed by the activity’s privacy settings. When the tool supports AGS, it can report grades and activity/grading progress to Quire.

Adding a tool to a course

  1. From the tool’s provider, get its login address, launch address, client ID and public key set address (JWKS).
  2. In the course, add an External tool activity and enter them.
  3. Give the tool Quire’s details, which the activity page shows:
    • Issuer: your organisation’s platform address, https://<organisation>.quirelms.com. It stays the same even if your organisation uses its own domain, so a registration never breaks when the domain changes.
    • Public key set: https://<organisation>.quirelms.com/.well-known/jwks.json.
    • Login address and deployment ID.
  4. Choose how the tool opens (in the page, a new window) and what it may know about learners. Anonymous, the default, shares no name or email.

Grades

A tool that reports grades writes into the activity’s gradebook column, and a tool may add columns of its own; they behave like any other column in aggregation, hiding and locking. A mark you enter in Quire takes precedence over later scores from the tool until you clear it; the tool’s score is still kept in the grade history, so the disagreement is visible.

The tool can also read the course’s participant list, filtered by role, within the same privacy setting.

Keys

Quire signs launches with a key for your organisation, replaced every 90 days. A new key is published a week before it is used, and an old one stays published for three months after, so tools that cache the key set never see a failed signature.

H5P and other external tools

Quire does not embed or ship an H5P runtime or sidecar (ADR 0019). Connect a hosted H5P subscription or an H5P instance you operate separately as an LTI 1.3 tool. When the provider supports and is configured for Assignment and Grade Services (AGS), it can report grades and activity/grading progress to Quire. H5P authoring, playback, its content bank and its attempt history remain with the provider.

AGS grade/progress exchange is separate from xAPI. A provider configured to send xAPI statements can use Quire’s statement store through that separate integration; LTI grade reports do not automatically become xAPI statements.

Quire can also make a best-effort import of .h5p packages into supported native interactive content. This converts supported content data; it does not run H5P libraries. Unsupported content is reported, and library code is discarded. Moodle courses imported with H5P activities still need an LTI tool connection to use the original external content. See the installation guide for the provider boundary.
